Description
We Deh Yah, Still highlights oral histories and archival material of Indo-Jamaican descendants of indentured laborers who have migrated to the United States with connections to the South Florida region. Join the SAADA 2021-2022 Archival Creators Fellow, Michael A. Henry, for the We Deh Yah, Still closing reception which features oral history interviews and mixed media recordings recounting the diverse identities of Indo- Jamaicans in South Florida and the ways in which they identify with, preserve, and promote their South Asian roots while being immigrants to the U.S. from Jamaica. Attendees will get to experience the art, music, culture, and history of the lesser known Indo-Jamaican diaspora while previewing archival material. Michael A. Henry is an independent researcher passionate about cultural heritage, migration, and the South Asian diaspora. His 2021-2022 fellowship project collected oral histories, migration stories, and cultural artifacts of Indo-Jamaican experiences and culture. This project hopes to broaden the discourse around the South Asian American diaspora to provide representation for minority subgroups such as Indo-Jamaicans and Indo-Caribbeans who trace their origins to the South Asian continent under British colonialism which dispersed them across the British colonies as indentured laborers. The Archival Creators Fellowship Program is made possible with grants from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The closing reception is made possible in partnership with Florida International University, African and African Diaspora Studies, Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center, Department of Religious Studies, and Professor Dr. Iqbal Akhtar Sponsor: FIU Department of Religious Studies Co-sponsors: FIU African and African Diaspora Studies, Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center, South Asian American Digital Archive (SAADA)
