2022 marks 50 years of clean water
October 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the Clean Water Act (CWA), the nation’s first comprehensive legislation protecting water quality. Spearheaded by Maine's U.S. Senator Edmund Muskie, this landmark legislation set the course to clean our waters and protect them from pollution. That goal paved the way for thousands of wastewater treatment plants to be constructed around the country. Wastewater plants play a vital role in cleaning up the pollution that was plaguing our waters, closing beaches, and devastating aquatic life.
The Portland Water District operates four wastewater treatment plants in Greater Portland and oversees two of the largest industrial pretreatment programs in the state. Over decades, millions have been invested to modernize plants and further improve processes to protect Casco Bay.

We’ll show you what it takes to clean 20 million gallons of wastewater a day. The plant is staffed with operators 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is responsible for preventing over 8 million pounds of pollution from entering Casco Bay each year.
