OKC Beautiful's Sustainability Social Hour is for those who love the environment and our city. Each session is centered around networking with those who have a passion for and want to learn more about environmental stewardship topics. Each session features a Q&A with a guest speaker. October's session features Mazey Heydman, stylist and founder of Sustain Salon. Come hear about her salon's sustainability practices, the sometimes-negative impacts of the beauty industry, and how businesses can be more cognizant of lowering our footprint. Mazey Heydman is a local stylist and salon owner who is committed to making big impacts with small changes towards a more sustainable beauty industry. She was born in Flint, MI and moved from the area at the age of 14 in 2004. Moving away from everything she’d ever known, and not having a lot of friends in school, she turned to the opportunity of attending Cosmetology School to fill her time. Graduating high school early and finishing her cosmo program at Francis Tuttle just before her 18th birthday, she began her career at the young age of 17. Since then, she has worked at several local salons until August 2018 when she opened her dream space, Sustain Salon. Her business is one of the most sustainable salons in the state, recycling, composting and diverting nearly everything that comes into the salon from the landfill. Sustain Salon has been awarded the ‘Green Oklahoma’s Best of 2022’ in the service category & recently made the list for top 50 Organic Way Salons in the world. Sustain Salon is her dream come true, and most days are spent educating salon professionals and her salon guests about the negative effects of the beauty industry and how we can make positive changes together.
