PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo is again sparking rumors of a possible promotion, this time to serve as President-Elect Joe Biden's Commerce Secretary.
The Rhode Island Democrat garnered buzz in December when reports said she was a top candidate to be the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. Raimondo herself firmly put those rumors to rest during her weekly news conference Dec. 3.
"I am not going to be President-elect Biden's nominee for HHS secretary ... and I have nothing else to say on that," Raimondo said at the time, saying she was completely focused on steering the state through the coronavirus pandemic.
Now the governor's back in the spotlight. According to Axios, Raimondo "has emerged as a leading candidate to be President-elect Joe Biden's commerce secretary," citing sources close to the process.
