Description

DESIGN WORKSHOP What is the future of Lincoln Beach? This second event consists of a welcome breakfast, a collective visioning activity, and working in design teams to imagine the future of Lincoln Beach. 9 to 9:30 a.m. -- Grab a bite to eat, view interactive displays, and meet other participants. 9:30 to 10 a.m. -- The formal program kicks off with music and movement. Learn where things stand with Lincoln Beach, the community visioning process, and regional water history. 10 to 10:30 a.m. -- We will collectively develop a timeline of New Orleans East and Lincoln Beach to better understand relationships between past, present, and future. 10:30 to 12:30 -- We will organize as design teams to tackle three questions: 1) How can Lincoln Beach serve New Orleans East?; 2) What kind of place should Lincoln Beach be?; and 3) What will stewardship of Lincoln Beach look like? All are welcome, and design, planning, and engineering experience IS NOT required to participate. Spanish and Vietnamese translation will be available. BACKGROUND Since 2020, community activists and New Orleans for Lincoln Beach have been focusing public attention on this historic Black space, and the City of New Orleans is now committing over $10 million in public dollars to the restoration of the beach as a public amenity. How does the beach relate to the future of New Orleans East? What activities belong here, and whom should the beach serve? Which histories and values should be represented, and what services should be provided? How forested or open should the beach be? And what is the best way for the public to enter? Can we imagine the beach in 30 years? Join New Orleans for Lincoln Beach and the Water Leaders Institute as we work towards a community vision for Lincoln Beach. The results will be shared publicly as part of an exhibition at the new Lincoln Beach Center, and be included in the city’s RFP (Request for Proposals) for planning, design, and engineering firms to bid on creating a master plan and initial construction documents for the project. The full schedule of activities: THURSDAY, 9/22 from 5 to 8 p.m. – Stories and Values DinnerSATURDAY, 9/24 – Design Workshop OCTOBER, TBD – Community Vision Exhibition
