On Dec 1, 2022, at 9 a.m. prompt, four distinct groups that have made ground-breaking trips to Sierra Leone, West Africa will meet face to face for the first time at the University of South Carolina, Beaufort, SC. This event will help us commemorate, reconnect and forge a plan for a more cohesive future that can be beneficial to both sides.
The Gullah Homecoming took place in 1989. It was followed by The Moran Family Homecoming in 1997, Priscilla’s Homecoming in 2005, and The Next Step Homecoming in 2019. But with all of this, still many people, even in the “Low Country” do not know about these connections that illustrate some of the most remarkable stories of African Americans' connections to Africa. There are films documenting all of these visits.
The event in December will bring these pioneering groups together in person for the first time ever to share their experiences and align on a strategic roadmap to build a much stronger and healthier relationship in the future. A documentary film will hopefully keep it forever.
The symposium entrance fee is $30. You will have a confirmed seat on a first-come-first-serve basis. Tickets for food are also available for purchase.
On Friday, December 2, 2022, at 7 p.m. you will attend the electrifying Annual Sea Island Christmas Show, performed by the Gullah-Geechee Traveling Theater. This will be held at the same location as the Symposium. See more details here: https://bit.ly/3DrrJnz
