Join the Massillon Museum and Ohio Arts Council for the Northeast Ohio region's free Poetry Out Loud Teacher Workshop on Saturday, October 1. Attendees are able to join the workshop in person at the Massillon Museum or via Zoom. Light refreshments will be provided to in-person attendees. Educators interested in free childcare available at the Museum during the workshop should email [email protected].
This workshop is geared toward educators who are interested in hosting a Poetry Out Loud competition at their public, private, or parochial high school. Students in grades nine through twelve are eligible to compete, as are eighth-grade students who are participating in ninth- through twelfth-grade classes. The Massillon Museum is the Ohio Arts Council's Northeast Ohio regional partner. Counties in the Northeast Ohio region are: Ashland, Ashtabula, Columbiana, Cuyahoga, Erie, Geauga, Huron, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Richland, Stark, Summit, Trumbull, Tuscarawas, and Wayne.
Attendees are also encouraged to visit the Museum before or after the workshop. Admission is free and there are fourteen art and history galleries to explore. Do the Mu, Ceramic Forms in Nature with Barrie Kaufman, and the Studio M exhibition reception for Barrie Kaufman: A Fragile Environment will also take place on October 1.
A partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Foundation, and the state and jurisdictional arts agencies, Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high schools across the country.
