LA GRANGE, IL — Last week, La Grange saw its rate of increase in new coronavirus cases at its lowest level since late October, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. As of Sunday, La Grange, including La Grange Highlands, had seen 1,500 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up by 50 from a week before, a 3.4 percent increase. Since early October, La Grange's cases have increased by nearly three times. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, the local number of coronavirus-related deaths increased by two in the last week, now totaling 26. The latest deaths were Dec. 27 and Dec. 28. All the local deaths have been those who were 62 or older, according to the medical examiner. The mortality rate among La Grange cases is 1.7 percent. Of the entire population of La Grange and La Grange Highlands, 7.8 percent have been infected with the coronavirus. About a tenth of 1 percent of the population have died from the virus. As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 979,821, up 4.5 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 16,755 state residents. Nationally, 20.3 million people have caught the virus, up 7.6 percent from the week before. A total of 349,246 people have died from the virus in the United States.
