The median earnings of women in 2021 were about 83% that of men. This presentation looks deeper behind what that number means and what it masks. We look at the trends in relative earnings of men and women over the past few decades, and study various hypotheses put forth in the economic literature to explain the relationship evidenced. Lastly, we discuss a few areas where work might be needed to further bridge the gap in average earnings of men and women.
