Bend Outdoor Worx presents the third edition of BreakOut BootCamp, a series of educational events to give start-up businesses the knowledge and tools to help them advance to the next level. Sessions will focus on key principles for launching and running a successful business. Panelists include top industry experts with experience across finance, digital marketing, product management and more. BootCamp Session #1: How do you pay for it? (9:00am-10:15am) – Come for a frank discussion about the highs and lows of raising capital for your business. Moderator: Justin Rae was lucky to start his outdoor apprenticeship as a professional river guide working throughout the world. Justin is a mentor and co-founder of Bend Outdoor Worx and when not working on his many side projects, he consults with entrepreneurs and executives through his wealth management business at Northline Wealth Management. Panelists: Tyrone Hazen is the co-founder and president of Puffin Drinkwear. A Bend, Oregon-based startup with more than 20 employees, Puffin makes personality-infused apparel for your drink to wear, keeping beverages chill and looking fabulous. Prior to launching Puffin, Tyrone was a boutique resort owner, a Wall Street financial analyst, an inventor at Fireside Audiobox, a real estate agent, and more. Sean Edwards, partner at Village Family Capital, is an experienced finance and business professional specializing in strategic planning, leadership, governance, business valuation, key business drivers, and capital structuring (debt and equity). Prior to joining VFC, Sean was a Senior Vice President with Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Portland, where he advised clients on all aspects of their capital structures and business activities. A legal partner / mentor for BOW, Scott Davidson is a partner at White Summers Caffee & James Attorneys in Portland where he works with entrepreneurs in start-up and later-stage companies. Scott specializes in industry groups that include consumer brands, apparel, footwear, outdoor, entertainment and technology. BootCamp Session #2: How do you sell it? (10:45am-12:00pm) Learn how to capitalize on your brand’s equity and be competitive in the digital world. Hosted by Algofy Outdoors/360 Digital Marketing A global business with clients across the world, Algofy is a one-stop-shop solution with a focus on being the #1 digital growth partner for outdoor brands. Local clients include Blackstrap, Earthcruiser, Giant Loop and many more, while national clients include brands like Yeti, Simms Fishing Products and more. BootCamp Session #3: How we did it! (1:00pm – 2:15pm) Founders of successful outdoor businesses share their personal stories and insights on how they built their brands and businesses. Moderator: A key BOW mentor, Meg Chun was a founding partner at KIALOA Paddles, and served as the business’s CEO and Brand Manager. President of Bend Surf, Meg is responsible for strategic planning and for all things legal and financial. Well-known in the community, Meg is a leader who volunteers and mentors many small businesses. Panelists: Katy Bryce, CEO of Robert Axle Project and Old Man Mountain in Bend. She co-founded Robert Axel Project with her husband and helped grow the business to a position as the bicycle industry's leader in thru axle solutions. In 2019, the couple acquired Old Man Mountain Products, the first cargo rack to fit on bikes with front and rear suspension. In addition to being entrepreneur, Katy is a writer, traveler, surfer, trail rider, runner, snow slider, knitter, and Oregon dreamer. Rick Fredland, founder and former CEO of Silipint, created an innovative, outdoor lifestyle business that found popularity in the drinkware industry and is the holder of the patent for silicone drinkware. The first and only silicone pint glass was a hit, spawning a successful business that Rick grew and recently exited. A rock climber, inventor and entrepreneur, he has great stories to tell – and a future full of adventures. Heather Kelly is the founder and CEO of Heather’s Choice, a line of dehydrated meals and snacks for adventuring. Born and raised in Bird Creek, Alaska, Heather is an avid outdoorswoman who loves nothing more than packrafting, picking blueberries and planning her next backcountry trip. She is a two-time NCAA National Champion and All-American in women’s rowing, evolutionary nutritionist and certified psychology of eating coach turned food entrepreneur.
