SAINT PAUL, MN — Supporters of President Donald Trump gathered at the Minnesota State Capitol and the governor's mansion for a "St. Paul Storm The Capitol" rally Wednesday. The demonstration took place while Trump backers in Washington D.C. breached the U.S. Capitol, forcing their way into both chambers of Congress.
The Minnesota Star Tribune's Stephen Montemayor noted there was "heavy security" at the state capitol, with about 30 Minnesota state troopers present.
The Minnesota State Patrol told Fox 9 reporter Theo Keith that Trump supporters did not breach the state Capitol and there were no arrests made before the demonstrators moved on to the governor's residence on Summitt Avenue.
Appears "Storm The Capitol" protest going to the governor's residence. An organizer and emcee, Alley Waterbury, earlier said of Walz: "If you don't open our state back up we will do whatever we need to do because we've got nothing left to lose."— Stephen Montemayor (@smontemayor) January 6, 2021 Republican Party of Minnesota Chairwoman Jennifer Carnahan condemned the violence taking place in D.C.
"The violence taking place at the United States Capitol is not American or representative of what we believe in, in our country," she said in a statement.
"Peaceful protests are protected by our constitution, attacking police and breaking into the Capitol is not. It's important we remember we are all Americans. Hoping for peace, safety and positive forward path for all."
