Rehoming Male Senior Cat

My mother in law just recently passed away and we are looking to rehome her cat. He's a old thing very grumpy. His fur is matted in some places but he won't let me do anything about it. He's also either not litter box trained or he just doesn't have control. He seemed to be happiest outside at one point he had ran away for a little over a week and turns out he was living his best life in our neighbors garage but once they found out he was ours they brought him back. I feel bad for him but I can't bring myself to take him to the pound where im sure they will just put him down and I can't take care of him as I'm a truck driver and my mom who looks after my other cat is disabled.
