Description
CHICAGO — In 2021, new laws take effect that give city minimum-wage workers an automatic pay raise, boost the price of gasoline, make parking at meters become more expensive, and send $35 tickets in the mail to drivers caught going 6 to 10 miles per hour over the limit by a speed camera.
The latter comes with a 44-day grace period for speeders. Starting on January 15, owners of cars caught speeding between 6-10 mph over the speed limit will receive a warning by mail. On March 1, the warning will be replaced with a $35 fine.
The price of gasoline increased by 3 cents per gallon, and the tax on computer leases of cloud software got a 1.75-percentage-point boost to 9 percent.
Staring April 1, people who rent residential property online must register with the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection and pay a new $125 registration fee as part of an ordinance that aims to improve the City's ability to ensure regulations are being met and take enforcement when necessary against problem locations.
Minimum-wage workers will have to wait until July 1 for the pay raise they were promised in 2019. That's when the city's minimum wage for companies with more than 20 employees increases to $15 an hour. The mandatory wage for smaller companies increases to $14.50. And the minimum wage for tipped workers is set to increase to $9 an hour.
