BURR RIDGE, IL — A man holding a gun and wearing a ski mask was seen outside a house in broad daylight in early December. This is part of a trend in which criminals are becoming more brazen, police said.
About 4 p.m. Dec. 4, a Nest doorbell camera caught footage of the man approaching the house and rummaging through an unlocked car in a driveway in the 2000 block of Savoy Club Court, according to police. The suspect ran off after he was startled by the resident, who came out of the garage, police said.
The resident told police that the only item taken was a remote garage door opener.
According to the Burr Ridge Police Department, the suburbs have seen an increase in property crime over the last three months.
"The offenders are becoming more brazen and active outside of nighttime hours," police said in a community bulletin.
Police said they had no better photo of the suspect in the recent incident than the one in the bulletin, which is what Patch is running with this story.
In the bulletin, police said all the cars stolen in Burr Ridge's residential areas since 2016 were unlocked with the keys inside or nearby.
"These are often crimes of opportunity," the police said. "Do not give criminals the opportunity to victimize you and your community."
