Explore: The fastinating world of persimmons, pawpaw, chestnutsThe relationship of these foods & the Underground RailroadHow self-liberators used the natural world to assist in their escapes to freedomTake a self-guided tour of the Commons, Museum Garden, Animal Pens, Historic Outbuildings and Slave Cemetary.The speakers will present from 1-2:15pm! Please feel free to arrive at 12pm for a self-guided tour of Button Farm Living History Center. Stay till 3pm to check out brochures and table top displays, and continue with self-guided tours of the farm till closing time at 3pm. Michael Judd will talk all aboutwell adapted tree crops for the mid-atlantic region, including persimmons, pawpaws and chestnuts. Anthony Cohen will discuss Foraging Freedom, a new program at Button Farm, that explores how self-liberators used the natural world to assist in their escapes to freedom. Cohen will detail the native plants and other resources found within Seneca Creek State Park today and how they were used for food, clothing, navigation and shelter on Southern plantations and the Underground Railroad. Francis Smith will be talking about the regenerative, sustainable practice of agroforestry and his edible understory concept versus traditional agroculture, as well as the opportunities and challenges of incorporating agroforestry into traditional forestry practices, and its potential for urban/community forestry.
