CLEVELAND — The Department of Justice's Northern Ohio office collected more than $28 million in civil and criminal actions in fiscal year 2020. U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman announced the final collection totals on Tuesday. He said $21 million was collected in civil actions, while nearly $7 million was collected in criminal actions. "This year, when many of our processes and procedures were forced to change due to the pandemic, the Northern District was nonetheless able to recover a substantial number of funds from numerous civil and criminal judgments," Herdman said. "When we represent the United States of America and secure a collection judgment, we will seek to recover every dollar possible." The Northern Ohio office also collected more than $11 million in asset forfeitures. Those assets are placed into the Department of Justice Assets Forfeiture Fund and are used to restore funds to crime victims and for law enforcement purposes. The Department of Justice said it collected funds from companies accused of perpetrating bribes, collecting kickbacks, and skirting the H-1B visa system.
