Description
This multi-faceted, in-person event invites the public to explore the importance of conscious identity labeling in healthcare situations. Through a short TED Talk-like presentation, an interactive identity-focused session on discovering behavioral triggers, and guided conversations with healthcare organization representatives focused on respectfully engaging Black and Brown community members, attendees will grow in their understanding of why and how identity matters for people of color in healthcare situations. The goal of this event is for Black and Brown people who attend to have more confidence and support in verbalizing their choices of racial/ethnic identification labels, and for white people to have better information and answers to questions they are hesitant to ask out loud. This event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival. Dinner will be served; therefore, please reserve tickets (at no charge) so that we can have an idea of head count. Food will reflect the racial/ethnic cultures of the International Marketplace. This event will accept walk-ins, but attendeed will need a reservation ticket to be able to get food. This event will be held at the Global Village Welcome Center (GVWC), at 4233 Lafayette Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46254. The building is close to the corner of Lafayette and Georgetown Roads, and there is a large lot with plenty of parking. The GVWC is a wonderful place - it is a cultural museum as well as an event space. We will open the doors an hour early, at 5:00 pm, for anyone who would like to visit the cultural exhibits before the event begins. This event is not for small children, but well-behaved pre-teens and older are welcome to attend. A partnership between the Komen Tissue Bank, Pink-4-Ever Ending Disparities and Men of Pink, the Indiana Donor Network, and the Global Village Welcome Center. ABOUT SPIRIT & PLACE. The Spirit & Place Festival (Nov. 3-13) celebrates the powerful role the arts, humanities, and religion play in community life and is housed in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI.
