She developed and implemented the Native American Cancer Research Program at the National Cancer Institute. She is the founder of the Native American Cancer Research Corporation (non-profit). As the coordinator for the Strong Heart Study for the past four phases, she has worked with and is well known to many community members, tribal council members, and health directors. He maintains an active clinical and research presence at Avera and has contributed to over 200 abstracts, book chapters, and manuscripts and has faculty appointments at the KU, SDSU, and USD. “How can ‘big data’ in health care improve outcomes for underserved communities?” William K. He completed his Internship in General Surgery and Radiology Residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, and then fellowship in Neuroradiology at the University of Utah. After completing his military service, He practiced in Cincinnati for two years before moving to South Dakota with his family. 11:00 – 11:45 AM “Practice Based Research Networks in Addressing Colorectal Cancer Research.” Allison Kelliher, MD Dr. Kelliher is an Alaska Native, Dena, from Nome, Alaska. She is the Director of the American Indian Collaborative Research Network (AICoRN), a Practice-Based Research Network at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences where she is also an Assistant Professor. She also serves as faculty at the University of Washington School of Medicine and University of Alaska Anchorage and serves on the Board of Directors for the Association of American Indian Physicians. She is the first and only physician trained as a Traditional Healer in a Tribal Health setting and weaves this into her practice as a Family and Integrative Physician. 11:45 – 1:00 PM Lunch – Provided on site 12:00 -12:30 PM Sponsor presentations 1:00 – 1:45 PM “Keynote Address” Monica Bertagnolli, MD Dr. Bertagnolli is an American surgical oncologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Dana–Farber Cancer Institute and the Richard E. Wilson Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. She advocates for inclusion of rural communities in clinical studies and serves as Chair of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology. Bertagnolli specializes in the treatment of tumors from gastrointestinal diseases. She is the former President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and was elected Fellow of the National Academy of Medicine in 2021. Bertagnolli is named the first woman to lead the National Cancer Institute since its founding in 1937. 1:45 – 2:30 PM “Prostate updates” Daniel Petereit, MD, FABS, FASTRO 2:30 – 2:45 PM Break/Snack 2:45 – 3:30 PM “Analysis of a large case series of lung cancer patients” Martin Tammemagi, PhD Dr. Tammemagi has a strong interest in cancer epidemiology with special interests in lung cancer screening and cancer risk prediction modeling. He has been a co-investigator and remains an active analyst in the U.S. Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial (PLCO), the U.S, National Lung Screening Trial (NLST), and the Pan-Canadian Early Detection of Lung Cancer Study, and is an active associate member of the U.S. NIH NCI Cancer Intervention and Surveillance Modeling Network (CISNET) lung group. Dr. Tammemägi currently also serves as the Scientific Lead on Cancer Care Ontario’s Lung Cancer Screening Pilot for People at High Risk. 3:30 – 4:00 PM “A High level overview of palliative care” Francine V. Arneson, MD Dr. Arneson is a palliative medicine physician located in the Prairie Center on the Avera McKennan campus in Sioux Falls, SD.
