The government is only a reflection of the electorate. When the government is doing its job (passing bills, working across the aisle, compromising) it becomes boring to the dull-witted electorate, and they lose interest. The Trump base are good and motivated individuals who tired of grid locked, snail paced governance we pay for. Their problem was in an attempt to elect an outsider to "drain the swamp," they only elected someone from the swamp. Further, because he lacked even an iota of knowledge how government works, he was doomed to disaster. Psychology has long discovered that simply collecting a random sampling of individuals, allowing them to solve a problem, the majority always find the best and simplest solutions to complex problems. The same is true of the United States population as a random sampling re: democratic political leaders. You have to have faith in the concept and believe in our three hundred year experiment in government, if you wish to remain a democratic nation.
