Description
Join us for a celebration of the opening of the Visions of Progress: Portraits of Dignity, Style, and Racial Uplift, an exhibition showcasing portraits that African Americans in Central Virginia commissioned from the Holsinger Studio during the first decades of the twentieth century. The portraits expressed the individuality of the women and men who commissioned them and silently yet powerfully asserted the Black community’s claims to rights and equality. Chief curator John Edwin Mason will give a short gallery talk, and visitors will have an opportunity to tour the exhibition and ask questions. Also on view: No Unity Without Justice: Student and Community Organizing During the 2017 Summer of Hate. Join us for gallery talks by curators Kendall King, Jalane Schmidt, Natalie Romero, and Hannah Russell-Hunter. This event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required.
