MICHIGAN — More than 2,200 new cases of the coronavirus and nearly 190 additional COVID-19 deaths were reported in Michigan Tuesday, according to data provided by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Michigan reported 2,291 new COVID-19 cases and 189 new COVID-19 deaths Tuesday, bringing the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the state to 504,410 and growing the coronavirus death toll to 12,867, state health officials said. Officials said 117 of the deaths reported Tuesday were identified through a vital records review and occurred previously. As of Thursday, 363,611 people in Michigan have recovered from the coronavirus, according to state health officials. Tuesday's coronavirus update comes after the state on Monday eclipsed the 500,000 mark for total coronavirus cases. "COVID-19 didn't end with the new year," Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said upon the announcement. "There is still more work to do to beat this virus, but I know that Michiganders are up to the challenge. Let's harness our Michigan grit and eliminate this virus once and for all." Despite reaching half a million coronavirus cases, the state has seen its daily COVID-19 reports slowly trending downward in recent days. On Monday, the state reported its fewest number of new coronavirus outbreaks in Michigan schools, adding just three to a long list of ongoing coronavirus outbreaks. On Tuesday, the Michigan National Guard announced that 300 of its members received their first round of vaccinations on New Year's Eve.
