Questions & Answers What is your typical process for working with a new student? When working with new students, it is important that I understand their music tastes, aspirations, and abilities before moving forward. Alot of instructors use a simple formula for new students and will start working out of a typical guitar lesson book or have the student learn traditional songs to 'inspire'. I want to make sure that the student is not only learning but enjoying the process of learning. Too many times have I seen someone get all jazzed up about learning an instrument only to see them give up at the first sign of difficulty. If I can present learning the guitar as fun, no matter how challenging the piece, then the student will always rise to the occasion. What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work? I graduated from AACC with a degree in Music in 2012. I have been performing and playing with bands since 2015 when I formed the jazz/funk band SHP. Since SHP I have played in country bands, americana groups, jazz ensembles, and currently perform as an acoustic duo in the Delmarva area. Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here. My rates are as follows: Home visit: $50 - 30 minute lesson $75 - 1 hour lesson How did you get started teaching? I taught several of my friends guitar while growing up and decided to teach professionally at M.E.A. in Lexington Park while I was attending college at St. Mary's College of Maryland. After moving back from Asheville I started teaching at School of Rock in Gambrills and managed the SOR in Arnold for 5 months. I continue to teach through SOR as a substitute teacher What types of students have you worked with? I have yet to turn a student down. I have worked with ages 5-67, any level of proficiency, and any style of music. What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise? It is best to find a teacher that not only inspires you to create and learn on your own but that shares a similar interest in music and playing styles. What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs? What are my goals? What do I want to get out of taking lessons from a teacher? Is guitar really the right instrument for me? Should I focus first on the basic guitar techniques that are all over Youtube and then seek out a teacher for more advanced lessons?
