UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Over 100 firefighters successfully controlled a blaze Monday night that started around 9 p.m. on the Upper West Side. The second-alarm electrical fire ignited within a fourth-floor residential building at 241 West 108th Street, according to police. The flames made their way out of the building, igniting a nearby sidewalk gazebo, and also creeping into a manhole on the block, according to the FDNY. The manhole catching on fire caused power to go out within buildings on the block, a spokesperson from the FDNY told Patch. The 106 firefighters had the blaze under control by 11:56 p.m., according to the FDNY. The fire department also reported no injuries from the fire. Firefighters followed up in the building to check for any areas affected by carbon monoxide. Con Ed "isolated the origin and has control of the scene" regarding the power loss, an FDNY spokesperson told Patch. A building on West 108th Street was left with burn marks and broken windows after a Monday night fire. (Rob Garber) The FDNY did not specify how the fire started outside of the "electrical" classification.
