Description of the General Operation : Coastal Transportation Inc. (CTI) operates several ocean going freighters carrying cargo between Seattle and Western Alaska. As part of this operation, CTI owns a terminal on Seattle’s Lake Washington Ship Canal. Freight is received at our Seattle terminal by truck for loading onto the freighters for delivery up to Alaska. Similarly, cargo coming down from Alaska is unloaded at the Seattle terminal then distributed via truck and train all over the U.S.. Northbound (from Seattle to Alaska), our vessels carry a variety of palletized and bulk goods including, but not limited to, building materials, fishing apparatus, machinery, vehicles, non-bulk lubricants and foodstuffs – fresh, frozen and dry. Our vessels return southbound primarily with palletized and hand-stacked cases and bags of frozen seafood. Unloading is done in freezer holds that can be as cold as 20 degrees below zero. The work is repetitious and hard. Work hours can vary depending on the arrivals and departures of our vessels. Position: The position is for dock worker who is responsible for moving all cargo, as directed by the Longshore Supervisor and Loadmaster, as quickly and safely as possible. Responsibilities and Duties: Drive a forklift after completing operator training course Sweep and clean holds as directed Stack up to 90 pound boxes on pallets Properly secure cargo using chain and binder system Sling cargo properly for deck loads Focus on cargo quality and recognize any load which doesn’t meet Coastal’s standards Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries Skills/Experience Required: Hard worker that takes action before having to be told what to do Willingness to learn and perform many different tasks in a complex operation Flexibility in hours worked as needed (including overtime) Ability to identify and handle freight properly based on supplied information & visual cues Ability to work as an individual or as a team member as required Physical Requirements: Medium to heavy work, lifting up to 50 pounds often and up to 98 pounds occasionally Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection Stoop/bend/knee/crouch/balance/climb on an occasional basis Exposure and working in an environment with temperatures below zero Work Environment: Dock worker jobs typically require the ability to lift and push heavy objects. Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions. The employee may also be exposed to loud noises, dangerous machinery and equipment and situations which require the utmost attention to safety. Work Schedule: Generally Monday – Friday 7AM to 3PM. Overtime necessary at times. Pay: Starts at $20/hour or more depending on experience We will not accept phone calls.
