Description

This workshop is designed for farmers, farm-based educators, and non-formal educators. Are you looking to build a farm-based education program, or inspire your existing programming? At this workshop, you’ll fill your toolbox with kid-tested activities as you join a community of peers from around the region. Spend time in hands-on, activity-based learning while you explore Shelburne Farms’ dairy, farmyard, garden, and forest classrooms. Experience activities from Shelburne Farms’ publications Project Seasons and Cultivating Joy and Wonder as we discuss ways to engage school groups and farm visitors of all ages. In addition to activity sharing and program development, we’ll gather tips for creating a safe learning environment and will have ample time for getting to know one another and our respective farm-based education sites. Read more about this program on our blog. View a Sample Workshop Agenda Co-presented with the Farm-Based Education Network, a project of Shelburne Farms. INSTRUCTORS Susie Marchand - Susie’s work at the Farm brings together her passions for teaching, agriculture, and the environment. She works with the Farm-Based Education Network to offer professional development workshops for farmers and educators that convey the importance of connecting learners of all ages to their food and fiber systems. She develops and teaches family programs and special events, and oversees the Farm’s largest public program: the Children’s Farmyard. Vera Simon-Nobes - Vera is a mom, gardener, and farm-based educator who comes from a family of teachers. She became the Farm-Based Education Network Coordinator in 2013, and observed the Network’s potential to connect peers through shared values of experiential learning, joy, equity and inclusion, and a humble desire to grow. Vera believes farms are the best places for relationship building, learning through doing, and connecting with oneself and the ecological communities that support us, and that everyone has the right to these opportunities.
