Along with Smith and Jones, other 2020 finalists were Florida quarterback Kyle Trask and Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Alabama running back Najee Harris narrowly missed the final cut, finishing fifth in voting. Smith now joins the likes of Crimson Tide running backs Mark Ingram and Derrick Henry as the school's honorees on the distinguished list, all of which have come during the Nick Saban era. Going into a season with most eyes on star receiver Jaylen Waddle, Smith would emerge as a critical part of the Tide's offensive firepower — even more so after Waddle went down with an injury against Tennessee in October. Over the course of the 2020 season and postseason leading up to the national championship, Smith caught 105 passes for 1,641 yards and 20 touchdowns, breaking multiple single-season and career records along the way. He also logged 219 return yards and a touchdown on special teams. The Heisman Trophy will just be the latest addition to Smith's collection from the last year, which includes hardware for SEC Offensive Player of the Year. He also became the first receiver named Associated Press Player of the Year and is a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, given each year to the nation's top college wide receiver. A native of Amite, Louisiana, Smith has been a standout talent for the Crimson Tide since his freshman year, which was capped off with a game-winning 41-yard touchdown reception by way of a pass from Tua Tagovailoa to beat Georgia in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship. Smith will also finish his college career in a national title game, as Alabama (12-0) will face off against Ohio State (7-0) in Miami on Monday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. Follow Patch here for updates or on Facebook and Twitter.
