NORTHPORT, Ala. — Officials have postponed a public information gathering session previously scheduled for Wednesday relating to a proposed aquatic park in Northport and will now hold a virtual session on Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. The Utah-based firm conducting a feasibility study for the project, which also includes a sports complex in Northport, was initially set to hold an in-person public meeting to receive input and hear thoughts from those in the community. Due to the local rise in coronavirus cases, however, city officials opted to change the format out of an abundance of caution." "We felt that due to the ongoing rise of COVID-19 cases in our area we needed to adjust and better accommodate the citizens that want to provide feedback on the potential aquatic park," Northport Development Coordinator Max Snyder told Patch on Monday. "The city and our consultants will utilize a user-friendly virtual meeting platform that will allow everyone to participate from the comfort of their homes." Snyder said credentials will be sent to registered participants closer to the meeting date. Patch previously reported that talks of an aquatic park, spurred by District 5 Councilman Jeff Hogg, were first started nearly a year ago, eventually morphing to also include a sports complex. A Request For Proposal (RFP) was issued on July 21 for firms interested in conducting the study, with Victus Advisors selected from 10 competing firms. Victus is also partnering with a nationally-recognized firm in aquatic park studies and development, Counsilman-Hunsaker, to analyze the water park component of the project.
