DEARBORN HEIGHTS, MI — Police in Dearborn Heights are asking the public for help identifying two robbers who tried stealing a pickup truck in Dearborn Heights that left one dead and one injured Sunday morning. Police said a 30-year-old man drove his pickup truck into his driveway at 6:30 a.m. on the 26000 block of McDonald Street in Dearborn Heights when two armed robbers approached the man. As the two robbers approached the truck with handguns, the driver put his truck in reverse and sped away from the driveway with one robber hanging on to the door, police said. The robber, a 31-year-old man from Melvindale, was injured after he clung to the truck's door, police said. Police did not exactly elaborate how the robber was injured in the process, but said he died from his injuries the next day at a nearby hospital. As the truck sped away, the second robber began firing shots, missing the vehicle but striking a nearby home, police said. The robber then got into a getaway car that was being driven by a third suspect and sped away from the scene, police said. The pickup truck driver was not struck by the gunfire but did crash his truck, police said. He was injured in the crash but declined medical treatment, police said. "This does not appear to be a random incident and is believed to be tied to an event the victim attended in the hours leading up to the robbery;" Dearborn Heights Police Chief Jerrod S. Hart said. "Nonetheless, the robbery resulted in a loss of life and a suspect firing a weapon in a neighborhood, striking a nearby home. Thankfully, no innocent community members were harmed." Police are looking for the shooter and getaway driver in the attempted robbery. Anyone with information regarding the attempted robbery was asked to call the Dearborn Heights Police Department's Sergeant Derwick at 313-277-6770. Tipsters who wish to remain anonymous can submit information to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-773-2587.
