Worcester Senior Center Will Be Vaccine Hub For First Responders

WORCESTER, MA — The Worcester Senior Center will serve as a regional hub to deliver the coronavirus vaccine to local police officers, firefighters and EMTs, state officials announced Tuesday morning. The senior center, located along Providence Street on Vernon Hill, will begin offering the vaccine to first responders as soon as Jan. 11. First responders from Worcester, Grafton, Holden, Leicester, Millbury, Shrewsbury and West Boylston will be served at the facility. City Manager Edward Augustus Jr. said on Dec. 30 Worcester would open an "emergency dispensing super site," but did not say where it would be. As of last week, the city's main hospitals — UMass Memorial and Saint Vincent — had given about 6,000 coronavirus vaccines. Two vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna were approved for use by the federal government late in 2020. Massachusetts is following a three-phase plan for distributing the vaccines. Medical professionals and people living in congregate care settings are getting them first. The larger public should begin getting vaccines beginning in April.
