BUCKHEAD, GA — The man accused of firing the shot that killed 7-year-old Kennedy Maxie while she was Christmas shopping with her family in Buckhead was arrested Wednesday, according to Atlanta police.
Daquan Reed, 24, was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals Service in Hampton, Virginia Jan. 6, police said in a statement. Reed, a Virginia native, faces multiple charges including felony murder in Maxie's death.
Maxie was shot in the back of the head Dec. 21 by a stray bullet while riding in a car with her mother and aunt near Phipps Plaza; however, investigators said the shooting stemmed from a fight between Reed and other men in the mall parking lot. Maxie was rushed to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, where she was in critical condition until she died of her injuries Dec. 26.
"We are very appreciative of work our investigators and the U.S. Marshals put into locating and apprehending Mr. Reed and we are relieved to know this murderer is no longer roaming anyone's street," Atlanta police said in the statement.
Reed is pending extradition to Atlanta, police said.
