This dialogue will explore the complex intersections of art, activism and literature with a special veneration for our beloved literary foremother, Zora Neale Hurston including live performances and art presentations from University of the Arts students and alum. Ticket includes signed copy of MAGNOLIA FLOWER. Magnolia Flower is picture book reimagination of a story by beloved African American folklorist, Zora Neale Hurston. Adapted by National Book Award winner and #1 New York Times bestselling author of How to Be an Antiracist and Antiracist Baby, Ibram X. Kendi, Magnolia Flower follows a young Afro Indigenous girl who longs for freedom, gorgeously illustrated by Loveis Wise (The People Remember, Ablaze with Color). MAGNOLIA FLOWER marks the launch of a major literary event: Pairing one of the most recognized Black voices in American literature with one of today’s leading voices in antiracist literature is nothing short of major. Hurston and Kendi’s projects will undoubtedly make a mark in the world of Black and American children’s literature. Zora Neale Hurston is a pillar of American literature as a participant in the Harlem Renaissance, best known for her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. Toni Morrison called Zora “One of the greatest writers of our time." She has sold over 8 million books and none of her titles have ever gone out of print. Hurston’s folklore is packed with sophisticated humor, charm, and morality. Dr. Kendi retains Hurston’s distinct voice while also adapting the folktale so that it appeals to young readers. Magnolia Flower will appeal to bookworms, educators, parents, and other Hurston enthusiasts. We are very excited to introduce Hurston to a new generation of readers. Additional books for sale on location. Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, who was recently named a 2021 MacArthur Fellow, gained prominence with the releases of Stamped from the Beginning (a National Book Award winner) and How to be Antiracist.
