Of all the classic beer ingredients - malt, hops, water, yeast - yeast is perhaps the most mysterious. For centuries humans brewed beer without really knowing what yeast was or how fermentation functioned. Only since Louis Pasteur have we realized these little organisms are responsible for the miraculous conversion of sugar into alcohol. Yet yeast is also responsible for much more, for how the yeast does its job has a massive impact on the final flavor of the beer.
In this class, Logan McLean of Drekker Brewing will help us learn how yeast results in a delicious array of beer flavors. Expect to explore the different types of yeast brewers employ and learn how each responds to and produces certain characteristics. You will taste examples of many different kinds of beer - crisp lagers to flavorful ales to beer made with wild yeasts. Join us for this celebration of a beer drinker's favorite microorganism.
