Description
This is for a series of workshops in Minneapolis that explore the relationship between American avant-garde jazz and the emergence of "world" music in the 1970s and '80s. Three evening sessions will happen over the course of the fall / winter; you would only need to be present at one.
We will be looking at some of the key recordings, practices, and texts by artists who operated in or influenced this realm, including Pandit Pran Nath, NanĂ¡ Vasconcelos, Johnny Dyani, Ahmed Abdul-Malik, Alice Coltrane, Okay Temiz, and Don Cherry.
Preference is given to those with access to traditional instruments: sitar, kora, berimbau, baglama, etc. The gig involves a short presentation with your instrument (we can discuss the content) and a session of improvisation with a group of players. Three hours at the most, but likely closer to two.
If you play in a tradition I haven't mentioned here, but feel that you might be a good fit, feel free to get in touch. Same goes for anybody reading who simply wants to participate in the workshop, or even just watch / listen.
This is a paid gig. Thanks for reading.
