Description

The Footner family will be donating a complete collection of Hulbert Footner's books and personal items to Calvert County Historical Society. This will be the largest and most extensive, "in-tact" and complete collection of Hulbert Footner known and all will be located at Historic Linden. When taking into account the extent of his life written works and personal items, (his typewriter, pigeon-hole desk, reading lamp, manuscript chest, and settee from Charles Gift), we determined that we need a special place at Linden to showcase all these items. Please join us as we celebrate Hulbert Footner and his life's works. Hulbert Footner was born in Canada before moving to the United States. Footner came to Calvert County from New York, while on a trip to Florida. He paused his journey due to inclement weather on the Chesapeake, taking shelter at Solomons Island. During his stay Footner then fell in love with the people, Southern Maryland and then married Ms. Gladius Marsh. In 1915 he purchased Preston on the Patuxent, which he renamed Charles Gift (later he wrote a book by the same name). He lived in Calvert County for the balance of his life in which he authored over 60 books, including hundreds of articles for popular outdoor publications. He wrote six plays and nine of his books were made into movies. The really great part about Footner's life is after he bought and restored, Charles Gift and he lived in Calvert County until his death in 1944. He is buried along with his wife and mother at Middleham Chapel in Lusby, Md.
