Description

This course will be held on the first day of Navratri. The nine day festival commemorating Devi’s victory in battle against the forces of ignorance, attachment and evil. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Haley house, a food pantry, soup kitchen and community outreach program that helps providing homes for those in need. By participating in this course you will leave not only with a basic understanding of Hindu ritual and lore, but your contributions will be helping those in need. For when the marginalized and down trodden are fed, the Divine becomes full. This class is an introduction to the divine mother of Hinduism. Sasha will take us on a journey exploring mythology, symbolism, ritual and history. The focus of this course will be on the great goddess Durga, who is celebrated during the 9 day holiday of Navratri, and her many manifestations. We will go in depth defining her role within the Hindu pantheon as the embodiment of the creative spirit/energy or Brahman. We will explore the history and development of goddess worship in South Asia. We will touch on ritual, appropriate decorum in Hindu temples, terminology, and pronunciation of Sanskrit mantras. The objective of this course is for everyone to incorporate the divine feminine of Hinduism into one’s spiritual practice in a respectful and gracious way. Devi(The Goddess) has been worshiped since the dawn of civilization in the subcontinent of India, so we will only be able to touch on a fraction of information available about this powerful divinity.
