WELCOME BACK After more than a two-year hiatus- due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the highly anticipated California State University Cinema and Television Arts Northridge (CSUN) Senior Film Showcase is back for its 30th production. *Please make note of the special precautions we will be taking to ensure the health and safety of all of our guests. The night's festivities are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14. Our viewing will be held in the beautiful Samuel Goldwyn Theatre inside the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences building, 8949 Wilshire Blvd. in Beverly Hills, 90211. Doors to the theatre open at 7 p.m. * Please be mindful when consulting your navigation. Our venue is at AMPAS in Beverly Hills NOT at the Academy Museum. Parking information located at the bottom of this invitation. VIP tickets available Sept. 1, 10am. General Admission tickets available Sept. 4, 10am. THE MAIN EVENT Our host for the evening will be director, writer, and producer Mark L. Lester. Mr. Lester is best known for his high-action blockbuster films such as "Commando," starring Arnold Schwarzenegger; "Firestarter," starring Martin Sheen and Drew Barrymore; "Armed and Dangerous," starring John Candy and Meg Ryan; and "Showdown in Little Tokyo," starring Dolph Lundgren and Brandon Lee, just to name a few. We are also proud to have Mr. Lester as a CSUN alumnus. The five short films being showcased are: • “Cuffed,” directed by Parker Caston Jr. and featuring an appearance by Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG awards winner Sterling K. Brown. The film is about two young Black high school boys who get caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Although they escape the police, freedom does not last long. 13 min. • “Hot Latin Nights at the Granada,” directed by Franco Vidal. The Granada, a nightclub owned by the famed salsa singer Tony “El Tío” Lopez is closing down. El Tío’s nephew had no intention of attending the closing night, until the girl next door asks him to save the last dance for her. Now all he needs to do is learn how to salsa dance. 16 min. • “A Beautiful Sin,” directed by Ahmad Jack Almazeedi, tells the true story of a young couple in love in Kuwait City. Sara and Adam get engaged, but then one comes out as transgender. How will their love survive as they face conflicting religious beliefs and social norms in a region of the world that does not accept the concept of LGBTQ+. 15 min. • “El Mozote,” directed by Jasmine Galdamez, is the tale of a mother and her two children whose lives are interrupted when their small village is invaded by Salvadoran soldiers carrying out a gruesome plan during El Salvador’s civil war in the early 1980s. 17 min. • “A Mas No Poder,” directed by Ruben Fuentes, is the story of a young criminal who, in anticipation of his daughter’s birth, takes desperate measures to provide his family with a better future. His decision to betray his childhood friend puts his life at risk. 14 min. COVID PROTOCOLS All guests are required to show proof of vaccination and ID If a guest is unvaccinated, they will need to show proof of a negative PCR test taken within 48 hours and ID All guests are required to wear a medical grade (or higher) mask, regardless of vaccination status Anyone removing their mask to speak at the podium, participate in a panel, etc will also be required to show proof of a negative PCR test taken within 48 hours and ID, regardless of vaccination status. There will be a vaccine checkpoint before entering the theatre. Please allow for enough time for validation in addition to checking in for the screening. Because of the fluidity of the ongoing pandemic, we have opted to forgo our usual reception immediately following the screenings to accommodate more guests, as we know everyone has been patiently waiting for our return. We suggest filling your tummies before coming so as to not upstage the films with empty rumbling. The evening is sponsored by the CSUN Associated Students Instructionally Related Activities Fund and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, known worldwide for the Golden Globe Awards. All senior film project directors have the distinction of being Hollywood Foreign Press Association Fellows. Free parking is available in the garages at 8920 Wilshire Blvd/La Peer Dr. and 9025 Wilshire Blvd/Wetherly Dr. Both garages will open at 7pm and remain open until 30 min after the conclusion of our screening. There is also metered parking along Wilshire Blvd beginning at 7pm. The surrounding neighborhood is permit parking only and will ticket and tow.
