I need zelda help!

Hi I'm trying to play zelda breath of the wild on my switch. I've just started and got my first bow and arrows. I don't know what's happening but I can't grab them from my back to use them, they're equipped in the menu but when I push the command he reaches back and grabs nothing but air even though my bow is RIGHT THERE! I've tried Google and done everything people are saying and nothing is working. Maybe I'm on a quest for the old man or something that I've forgotten the objective to, I don't know. Help me! Meagan
