Description

Rice is a staple grain for Asian communities and is seen as a form of expression. Many cultures use raw and cooked rice in numerous ways as in food, rituals, worship, charity and blessings. The rice grains nourish the body, mind, and soul threading Asian cuisines by bringing diverse communities of people together. The 10 Ways of Rice is a curated participatory design experience featuring diverse and distinct ways of cooking, serving, and eating rice in Asia. Ten chefs will cook rice as their primary ingredient and sharing with guests as a means of highlighting cultural diversity. We invite everyone to celebrate our cultural similarities and differences and join us in promoting cross-cultural awareness and understanding. 70 TASTING PASSPORTS will be available for free when registering. TASTING PASSPORTS ensure a sample of rice from each of the 10 chefs. Guests not able to obtain a TASTING PASSPORT will still be able to sample a small assortment of rice products until quantities run out. In addition, Japan House’s Matcha Café will be open to sell beverages and kakigori, a Japanese summer festival treat! Cash or credit card accepted. Quantities are limited. Lavish events such as this make us even more aware that there are many people around the world for whom food is their main concern. In an effort to make a difference in our own community, we would like to support the Eastern Illinois Foodbank which fights hunger in 18 eastern Illinois counties including both Champaign and McLean. Guests are encouraged to make a $5 donation (cash or check only) and/or to bring canned goods to the event. __________ TASTING PASSPORT A tasting passport ensures you will get a sample of rice products from these 10 countries: Palestine-Lebanon, India, Iran, Thailand, Japan, Vietnam, Turkey, South Korea, Philippines and China.
