Description

About this event: The Make-A-Day Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides outreach to Columbus’ homeless population and any of our neighbors in need. Our block party styled, pop-up outreach events focus on providing opportunities for homeless guests to build personal relationships with other community members. We provide guests with personal care items, and a complimentary meal from a gourmet local food truck. Make-A-Day also offers guests free haircuts, shampoos, styling, and shaves from some of the city’s best local cosmetologists. Make-A-Day Foundation’s guests will also have access to help obtaining “on-the-spot” Medicaid health insurance coverage, as well as medical, behavioral health, veteran services, domestic violence support, and smart justice services & referrals. Volunteer Roles Explanation Read Carefully To Choose Your Preferred Slot! Volunteers will be assigned to specific roles. The event will be taking place from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm for our guests, but volunteers will need to be on-site from 10:30 am-2 pm. Servers We need volunteers willing to help serve guests their meal and work with the host to notify each guest when their resources are available (haircut, medical, legal, etc). The goal is to give our guests a restaurant-like experience, but with a more personalized touch. We want our guests to feel seen, so be sure to try to remember names and faces! Friendship Builders We also need people that are willing to sit and chat with people and build relationships and be good listeners to learn about people’s stories and needs. In doing so, we hope that folks can gently, and without being intrusive, inquire about their needs related to healthcare, health insurance, criminal justice support, and any other social services they may need. Cosmetologists/Barbers If you are a licensed cosmetologist or barber and looking for a way to help, we need you! This is what many of our guests come to our event for. It's a chance for them to feel good about the way they look and it's an honor to be able to provide that for them. We provide haircuts, shampoos, and facial hair clean up on our guests. (We do not provide coloring or styling services) We provide all products, supplies, capes, towels, sanitation products, shampoo station, and electric. You will need to bring your own shears, clippers, trimmers, combs, brushes, and apron. A small styling cart or table is also helpful but not required and cordless clippers and trimmers are very helpful. General Volunteers ***Greeters/Registration Table: Greet guests and check-in volunteers. Give volunteers their task sheets. ***Personal Care Item Table Workers: Organize personal care takeaway bags, and manage their distribution. Mini Volunteer Training - SAVE THE DATE - September 23rd, 1 pm-2 pm Make-A-Day Foundation will host a 1-hour mini-training on Friday, September 23rd, at 1 pm, prior to the event, to help people feel comfortable talking to our guests!
