Description
Join us as we continue our spiritual exploration theme of As Above, So Below, when we go below in the Ohio Caverns, Ohio's largest cavern, which is located in West Liberty, Ohio. The Ohio Caverns were formed thousands of years ago when an underground river cut through ancient limestone and created vast rooms and passageways. The designated Deepest Point of the caverns is 103 feet (31 m) underground. The Caverns were discovered by humans in 1897 because seventeen year old farm hand, Robert Noffsinger was curious. After a little digging in a low soft area of a field where rain water seemed to be disappearing quickly, he discovered a crevice which led into the caverns, today known as The Ohio Caverns. Typically, tours take guests through two different parts of the cavern. The Historic Tour begins at the site of discovery and includes the part that was originally explored from 1897 to 1925. The Natural Wonder Tour takes guests on a 1 mile walk through parts discovered after 1925. It includes the largest stalactite in Ohio, The Crystal King, along with many other marvelous formations and colors. The Winter Tour is the only tour offered from October 1st through April 30th. It is a hybrid tour, showing guests highlights from both the Natural Wonder and Historic tours. The temperature in the cavern is always 54 degrees so plan on wearing layers of warm clothes, including long underwear. Cavers should avoid wearing any type of clothing made of cotton because it absorbs and holds more water than synthetic materials and will make you cold more rapidly. It is a concrete path so all shoes are fine, but closed toed shoes are recommended. We will meet promptly at 9:00 am, at Spiritual Horizons, 230 North Sandusky Street, Delaware, OH. Then we will carpool to The Ohio Caverns together. After the tour, we will have time to process our experiences, visit the Gift Shop, and have lunch, before returning to Spiritual Horizons. Ticket price includes round trip transportation, tour coordination, and admission to the Cavern. Please bring extra money for lunch, or a sack lunch if you'd prefer something from home. Ticket sales end one week before the tour.
