Thursday, October 13th / 7pm / SDCC Theater / $10 USD Dance Films from Dallas Program + Meet The Makers This program will kick off NBFF in Dallas by screening local dance-related films. The program concludes with #MeetTheMakers, a moderated panel Q&A with the artists behind the screen of the films. For the safety of the kNOwBOX dance patrons, the audience is limited to 20 tickets. Tickets must be purchased in advance. The Waiting Room / World Premiere / Texas, USA / 10:22 Five women strut through a liminal space, flaunting a synthetic silhouette of power. Each body negotiates a deal with the other, weight and pressure, their only currency. MAKER: Danielle Georgiou, Ph.D. is a first-generation Cypriot-American director, choreographer, and performance artist based in Dallas, TX. Her stage and video work deal with puzzles found in gender and cultural identity—vulnerability, deformity, and beauty—and has been performed and exhibited nationally and internationally. In 2011, she created the performance project, the Danielle Georgiou Dance Group. With DGDG, Danielle has created and directed a series of collaborative, devised dance theatre productions and dance musicals. Danielle is also a movement coach and intimacy director for stage and film. She is a Professor of Dance, Humanities, and Visual Arts at Dallas College-Eastfield Campus. Promise Me You'll Sing My Song / Korea Premiere / Texas, USA / 06:00 "Promise Me You’ll Sing My Song" is an homage to Mr. Reuben Johnson, an innocent man who was lynched on December 27, 1874 in Mountain Creek, Texas, USA. Performed by dancer Matthew Roberts of Bruce Wood Dance (Dallas, TX, USA) near the site of the lynching of Mr. Johnson, "Promise Me You'll Sing My Song" invites viewers to wrestle with a history that hides in plain sight. Healing is possible when we look back to remember together. MAKER: Co-Founder of Dallas-based multimedia company The DigiBees, Jirard is a multifaceted artist & award-winning filmmaker. He has directed Music Videos for a host of artists, including Avery Sunshine, Fred Hammond & Eric Roberson. He has also lent his talents as a Director of Photography to a number of short & feature-length films. MAKER: Adam W. McKinney danced professionally with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Béjart Ballet Lausanne, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, and Milwaukee Ballet Company. His work engages dance performance, anthropology, social justice, community, technology and healing. An Associate Professor of Dance at Texas Christian University, he is the co-director of DNAWORKS. MAKER: Bruce Wood Dance, hailed as Dallas’ “shining star” by Arts and Culture Texas, is an award-winning contemporary dance company founded in 2010 by nationally acclaimed Texas artistic director and choreographer Bruce Wood (1960–2014). Bruce Wood Dance is built on Wood’s vision and prolific artistry. Artistic director Joy Bollinger successfully carries on Wood’s legacy and leads an outstanding company of 12 exceptional dancers. The mission of Bruce Wood Dance is to present high–caliber, contemporary choreography that harnesses the power of dance to entertain, enrich, and heal.
