Description

This week's walking tour comes hot on the heels of the second annual Chamberlain Legacy Lecture, which commemorates the General's birthday. Chamberlain’s Bowdoin and Brunswick led by John Cross September 18 at 1:30 pm Anyone who knows John Cross, the Secretary of Bowdoin College, a position he took over from his father before him, knows he's a walking encyclopedia of all things Bowdoin College history. Add to that his knowledge of Joshua Chamberlain--during his time as a professor and President of Bowdoin College and beyond--and you've got one knowledgeable tour guide! John knows all the stops, haunts, and tales related to Chamberlain's time at Bowdoin and in the town of Brunswick. This year's tour goes beyond the College and also includes key Chamberlain sites in the town, including the First Parish Church, which played such a large role in his personal life, and his grave in Pine Grove Cemetery. Starting point is at the Chamberlain Statue across from the Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum. Participants meet at starting point; driving directions and parking information provided upon registration. Please check in with your tour guide at least 10 minutes prior to tour time. Tours are limited to 20 unless otherwise noted. PHC maintains a waiting list in case of cancellations. Most tours are 75-90 minutes. Please dress accordingly for the weather and wear sturdy shoes, sunblock, and/or bug spray as needed. $8 PHC members; $12 general admission; free for children ages 0-11.
