Description
Mushroom Cultivation in 4 Easy ClassesStudents will grow mushrooms from spore to harvest over a 4 class series. Cultivation steps will be conducted at home by students with examples and explanations provided in class. We’re going to use steps that greatly reduce the chances of contamination and speed things up. Success is guaranteed, if you are willing to keep trying, so am I. Class 1, 9/22: In this class you will get to pick between two different kinds of magic mushroom spore syringes (for microscopy purposes). You will also receive a syringe full of blue oyster mushroom spores, petri dishes, agar culture mediums and parafilm to seal the dishes. We will go over mushroom reproduction and all the whys and hows of step one. Homework : Make spore plates and inoculate them. If your plates go bad, I will replace them. If they go bad again, I will replace them as many times as it takes for a small fee. Success is guaranteed if you stick with it. Legal disclaimer : Spores are provided for microscopy purposes only. Class 2, 9/29: We will meet again a week later but contact me in case we need more time; if so, we’ll meet the following week. You will bring in your inoculated spore plates. Each plate will have a lot of colonies on it and each colony is as different as you are from your brothers and sisters. Picking the right ones makes all the difference in the world. I’ll help you decide and mark the plates 1st , 2nd , 3rd etc. We’ll talk about how transfer the winners onto different plates made for growing them out. Homework: Make up the provided plates and make your transfers onto 10 plates. If all of your plates go bad, I’ll replace them. If they go bad again I’ll provide more for a fee. You will end up with at least one good plate no matter what so that if you are willing to keep trying, your success is guaranteed. Class 3, 10/13. We will meet again after two weeks to give the plates time to fill out. Once again, you bring in your plates and we will pick a winner. I will give you a special jar lid for making a liquid culture and some others for making something called grainspawn. I’ll explain how to make liquid culture and inoculate the grainspawn. Homework: Make up and sterilize the liquid culture with the provided medium and transfer mycelium into it. After this grows out for a couple of weeks, you’ll make up and sterilize the grainspawn jars and inoculate them with the liquid culture using the provided syringe. If things go wrong, I’ll work with you until you have success. Fees will apply for replacement material costs. Class 4, 11/10. After a month we will meet again for the final class (unless we need to adjust this time based on feedback you provide). Students will receive 4 bags substrate to grow out the mushrooms and have the option of either buying or borrowing the clips for sealing the bags. I’ll explain how to complete the finale and most rewarding steps. Homework: Sterilize grow medium bags, inoculate the bags with grainspawn and watch as your mycelium colonizes the bags and produces fruits. As usual, I will replace substrate and spawn for a fee as many times as it takes for you to have successful fruitings and continue to work with you for as long as it takes. After completing this course, congratulate yourself, you now have the skills necessary to grow virtually any kind of mushroom. Please remember to register separately for all four classes. Each class has a $40 ticket price that covers admission and the provided materials and supplies for that class. Required equipment and supplies must be bought separately. Required Equipment and Supplies:Still air box (available for a fee) or laminar flow hood if you have one, 23 quart pressure cooker, 1 pint sized jar, 9 quart jars, scalpel, flame sterilizer such as a Bunsen burner or candle, spray bottle, bleach, gloves, jar or bottle for sterilizing agar grow mediums, small kitchen gram scale (optional) Provided Materials and Supplies:Parafilm, 15 petri dishes, 2 kinds of powdered agar culture medium, lid for liquid culture jar, liquid culture medium with recipe, 9 lids for grain spawn jars, oats for grain spawn, syringes, choice of spore syringe, oyster mushroom spore syringe, polypropylene grow bags, unsterilized grow medium with recipe. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORMatt lives in Edmonds Washington with his wife Rebecca and operates a small mushroom farm on a piece of land where chickens and giant tortoises roam free. His interest in mycology goes back to the early 80’s when he foraged enough mushrooms to buy his first sweet set of wheels, a brown 77’ Subaru Sport Coupe. Since that time, his interests have only grown and in 2019, he founded Pure Fungal Fruits as a means of providing something of value to the community, spreading fungus and fungus knowledge far and wide.
