Interactive keynotes and panels will feature national and local leaders in environmental justice representing the sciences, policy, health care, community, and industry. The symposium will unpack the role of racism on environmental health inequities and engage the audience in thought-provoking conversation on innovative, collaborative solutions to promote sustainability and health equity through an antiracist lens. Masks required for in-person attendance. Boston University’s Center for Antiracist Research strives to be accessible, inclusive and diverse in our programming, events and offerings. Symposium Schedule: Fireside #1: Moving from Denialism to Climate Justice and Antiracism This fireside panel discusses the connections between racism and climate change. Perspectives from leaders in antiracism, environmental health, and medicine discuss how climate change magnifies existing vulnerabilities and present initiatives that center the marginalized communities. Speakers: Dr. Diana Hernández, Dr. Tamarra James-Todd, Dr. Ibram Kendi Moderator: Kimberly Atkins Stohr Fireside #2: Indigenous Communities, Authentic Academic-Community Partnerships, and Environmental Justice This fireside panel features a conversation at the intersection of academia and community about the challenges of the ecological crisis and injustices explicitly experienced by Indigenous peoples. Indigenous experts and community researchers working in environmental justice discuss how they are mobilizing to address environmental racism and build a more sustainable future. Speakers: Ruth Ann Norton, Dr. Darren Ranco, Dr. Rosalyn LaPier Moderator: Sonya Soni Fireside #3: A Conversation with Community Leaders: Policy, Environmental Justice, and Science This fireside panel includes speakers dedicated to understanding climate change as a public health crisis. Local leaders in policy, academia, and health care provide diverse insights on targeting the urgency of climate change while addressing racial and economic inequities in the quest for sustainability. Speakers: Senator Ed Markey, Dr. Thea James, Dr. Patricia Fabian, Dr. Mustafa Santiago Ali Moderator: Katharine Lusk Fireside #4: Collaborative Approaches for Sustainability and Health Equity Concluding this symposium is a fireside keynote dedicated to the future directions for sustainability and health equity. With perspectives from consumer industry to health care, panelists will discuss various approaches to cultivate environmentally responsible companies and promote increased access to healthy living.
