Description

“Over Hussain’s mansion what night has fallen I alone am left to tell my brother’s story On my brother’s body what dawn has risen Weep for my brother World, weep for Hussain” “Zainab’s Lament in Damascus” - Agha Shahid Ali Join us as we embark on a pilgrimage of hearts to recollect the sacrifices of Karbala and Shaam, through Ma’rifa’s in-person event, Making Sacred: In Martyrdom and Memory. Taking place in New York City, this immersive, exhibit-style event will explore two pillars of Imam Hussain’s and Sayyeda Zainab’s legacy: martyrdom and memory. Reflections from community members and scholars, work from artists across the country, poetry recitations, and multimedia pieces representing Karbala will all ask the question of what martyrdom means to us today. How can we aspire to witness God in our life and in our death? What role do storytelling, history, and community play in rooting us to a collective memory of martyrdom? And finally, how do we revive Karbala in our hearts, and transform our everyday lives and spaces into something sacred? The event is open to all, regardless of religious background. RSVP and proof of vaccination is required.
