About the instructor: Madison Wilds Burger is a multimedia artist and designer working in Chicago, IL. Her love for materials started at a young age when she was introduced to fashion and textile design through her mother. She has always been curious about the intersection of art and material science. She studied Fashion and Textile design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY where she focused on developing sustainable materials to use in her fashion collections. Her current textile work explores biological systems and regenerative design in pursuit of developing sustainable leather-like alternatives. In 2021 she founded Speculative Surfaces, a textile startup based in Chicago, IL, currently developing a lab-grown leather from bacteria cellulose. Her studio is located on the southwest corner of Humboldt Park. She is proud to be one of 25 members of Plant Chicago's Circular Economy Leaders Network where she is currently developing a line of biodegradable packaging materials. Madison has hosted workshops through FABSCRAP and has had her work published in The New York Times, The Council for Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and Women's Wear Daily. “In a time where we’re considering the vulnerability and fallibility of our own bodies, I am looking to different growth cycles as an inspiring source of resilience.”
