Built up by Dillon Basse (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Tristan Duncan (lead guitar), Madeline Jarman (bass), Mitch Fountain (synth), and Devon VonBalson (drums), the band is walking proof that the DIY approach is still alive and well in the modern music world. Growing up and maturing as musicians in a way that can only be done by spending years on the road together, flipturn is primed to usher in the era of their debut full-length album. A flipturn live show is a complete and total release of inhibitions, from the band to the crowd alike. The fever dream energy of their live shows has positioned flipturn as a metaphorical musical sun, holding fans in a trancelike orbit. Basse has a quality to his voice that absolutely ensnares the listener and pulls them deeply into the moment around them. The overall magnetism of the band has allowed them to bring the intimate qualities of their small town roots to a global audience. Back in 2017, flipturn released their debut EP Heavy Colors, which introduced the world to enduring favorites like “Chicago” and “Vanilla.” The following year saw the release of the Citrona EP and some of the band’s most beloved music to date. Most recently, Something You Needed was released right before the world shut down. During the pandemic, the band released a variety of live performances of fan favorites to keep the feeling of live shows fresh, even from home. With over 40 million streams on Spotify alone, countless sold out shows across the US, and tours with Mt. Joy, Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Wilderado, the band has a lead foot on the gas pedal. This year, flipturn will be joining the prestigious lineups of Bonnaroo, Shaky Knees, SXSW, Hangout, Sunfest, and Treefort to name a handful. Fans can also look forward to the upcoming release of their debut album in 2022. 8:45pm // Hotel Fiction Hotel Fiction is an Athens, Georgia-based band consisting of best friends Jade Long and Jessica Thompson. Both women have been playing music for over ten years and began writing, performing, and playing together in January 2019. In August, Hotel Fiction released their debut single “Astronaut Kids” to all streaming platforms which received a warm welcome from local audiences and several major U.S. cities. Hotel Fiction’s sound has often been described as genre-fluid, with indie, pop, and rock influences. With Jade’s dynamic vocals and piano and Jessica’s complementing lead guitar and harmonies, the two create a unique experience for listeners. In quarantine, the two finished recording their first ever album Soft Focus and released it in the fall of 2021. 7:45pm // Neighbor Lady On new record For The Birds, Atlanta-based Neighbor Lady expand the boundaries of their country-kissed indie rock sound to encompass an elegant style of lush and textural guitar pop sprinkled with, as songwriter and vocalist Emily Braden puts it, with “reverb and magic.” Full of gorgeous top-line melodies, spirited rock hooks, and Braden’s richly emotive vocals (and plenty of twang), For The Birds takes a kaleidoscopic approach to genre. The record features everything from catchy alternative (“Penny Pick It Up”) and starry-eyed country (“I’m With You”) to straightforward indie rock (“Scared”) and ambient-indebted otherworldly pop (“Haunted”). Neighbor Lady began as Braden’s solo project, but is now a four-piece consisting of Braden, guitarist Jack Blauvelt, bassist Payton Collier, and drummer Andrew McFarland. The band recorded For The Birds with Jason Kingsland (Kaiser Chiefs, Band of Horses, Belle & Sebastian) at Diamond Street Studios in Atlanta and it was mixed by Noah Georgeson (Andy Shauf, Cate Le Bon, Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom.) Though For The Birds is hallmarked by big sonic flourishes and brave moments of experimentation, the overall feeling is one of intimacy—four people in a room, making music together; fitting for a group of musicians who say they feel less like a band and more like a family. “This record came out of a lot of love and hard work and us caring so much about the music and each other,” says Braden. “And that’s pretty much what we’re about.” 6:45pm // Well Kept Well Kept is an alternative rock band from Athens, GA. Originally formed as the songwriting vehicle for Tommy Trautwein in 2019, the 5-piece rock outfit has since harnessed their own combination of modern indie rock and classic emo. With an ear for big hooks and in your face riffs, Well Kept has become an exciting piece of the Athens/Atlanta music world. 6:00pm // A.D. Blanco A.D. Blanco is a young, tight, and energetic rock band hailing from Athens, Georgia. The group pairs hi-fi modern alternative with organic indie rock to create “emotive, danceable earworms,” as described by Flagpole magazine. 5:00pm // The Getaway Company Formed by college friends Eli Bell and Trenton Mitchell in 2018, The Getaway Company features soaring choruses and guitar in a modern rock sound drawing heavy influence from 90s grunge and alternative.
