Description

The first family to lay claim to the land, that is today called Leu Gardens, were the Mizells. They traveled here in the 1800s and raised a large family in a small cabin . This required a tremendous amount of work from every member of the family, even the youngest. Children handled many daily tasks that even adults today would find challenging. Let's take a look at what it would be like to spend a day as a typical pioneer in Florida. You will learn how to make necessities for pioneer life! This class is geared for 8 to 12 years old.  Younger siblings can attend but may need help with certain activities. Instructor:  Cyndi Tomerlin Cyndi is a graduate from the University of Florida (Go Gators!) and holds a degree in History, Florida History & Art History. She has worked for several museums in Florida, from the Panhandle down through Central Florida. She is an author of a book "Adversity and Apron Strings" which focuses on the lives of Florida's courageous and strong pioneering women. Cyndi considers it an honor to teach Florida history to the public and to lead discussions about what life was like for pioneers, especially the children, during the1800s.   Original Mizell cabin near Lake Rowena.
