Description

The Design Justice Book Club continues the conversation from the 2020 Place Setting Book Club series that asked how we envision and create radically inclusive places that facilitate and support equitable communities. Join this free book club for one or all discussions reviewing books that highlight how architects, designers, and planners can foster universal inclusion and fairness in the built environment within the places and communities we impact, both locally and globally. Join us September 13, 2022 for a discussion of The Accommodation with author, Jim Schutze. In partnership with Big D Reads, copies of The Accommodation will be available for the community at the AD EX beginning 08/31. The book club discussion is free and in-person at the AD EX. About The Book: “The Accommodation is one of the first major works about the history of race and racism in Dallas, and its importance to the counter narrative of ‘Dallas as a great city for all’ can’t be understated,” shares Jerry Hawkins, Executive Director of Dallas Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation, who also serves on the Deep Vellum board of directors. “The telling of a Black story by a white author deserves continued critique and interrogation, however with The Accommodation, Jim Schutze delivered a must-read treatise about racism in Dallas that was both eye-opening and prophetic.” Future Design Justice Book Club Discussions: December 7, 2022: Barrio America by A.K. Sandoval Strausz
