In a field experience follow-up to her talk at the Natural History Institute, Dr. Lee Ann Woolery will lead a small group in the exploration of local habitats using alternative approaches to connect participants with nature at a deep level. Learn Art-Based Perceptual Ecology (ABPE) protocols, the same alternative research methodologies used at Citizen Artist™ to study critical environmental issues. “At Citizen Artist™ our ABPE protocols are steeped in other ways of knowing and multi-sensory learning modalities, ripe with art-based, speculative leaps of the imagination, alternative approaches to science inquiry in a modern science practice.” ABPE methods offer the practitioner a shift in perspective, opening to a new way of experiencing nature, creating a springboard for new ideas and new understandings of natural systems. Woolery is an interdisciplinary researcher, educator, scholar, and a practicing artist of over 30 years. With a focus on divergent ways of knowing, she pioneered Art-Based Perceptual Ecology, the alternative field-based research methodology used at Citizen Artist™. She holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies from Antioch University New England and a master’s degree from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. Dr. Woolery currently teaches art-based research methodologies on-line courses through the Citizen Artist™ platform. In addition she has taught in the Ph.D. in Sustainability Education Program at Prescott College and the University of Washington’s Graduate Program on Education, Environment and Community at IslandWood, Bainbridge Island, WA.
